THIS IS THE PLACE TO BUY TALL EVERGREEN HEDGES
We can supply a large variety
of evergreen hedges. For tall hedges Western Red Cedar, Laurel, Yew, Portuguese Laurel and Leyland Cypress produce the most reliable results.
Box, Yew, Holly and Privet can
be delivered ready planted in troughs (see the
Hedges in Troughs page). In addition instant
hedges (click on our Instant
hedges page) and Green Screens (click on our Living Green Screens page) include evergreens. However, many people like
to grow their evergreen hedges in the traditional way
starting with individual plants at the distances they
prefer to use.

Technical details. Bare root plants have been freshly lifted from the ground and wrapped and sold without the roots being contained. This system is not used for evergreens. Rootballed plants have been lifted by machine and a ball of root and soil has been contained in hessian. They can be planted as they are without removing the hessian. Wire rootballed plants are similar but this method is generally used for larger plants. In general bare root plants can be planted from November to April (when deciduous trees have lost most of their leaves) and rootballed plants for about one extra month. Plants in containers or pots should generally have been within the containers long enough for the roots to have developed to touch the inside of the pots but without becoming rootbound. They are suitable for planting at any time of year when the ground is not frozen hard or waterlogged.
WHEN YOU BUY LARGE TREES AND LARGE PLANTS PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THEY MAY NEED PLANTING BY CONTRACTORS. IF YOU BUY MATURE TREES IN PARTICULAR THEY CAN EASILY BE ROCKED BY HIGH WINDS AND MAY NEED GROUND ANCHORS OR BRACING. LARGE HEDGES MAY NEED TYING TO STOP THEM MOVING. IF YOU BUY LARGE TREES IN CONTAINERS BIGGER THAN AROUND 60 LITRES THEY MAY BE DIFFICULT TO HANDLE AND SUCH LARGE TREES MAY NEED MOVING AND PLANTING BY MACHINE.
WATERING MAY BE ESSENTIAL DURING THE FIRST TWO YEARS AT LEAST FOR LARGE TREES AND ESPECIALLY MATURE TREES. AFTER YOU BUY LARGE TREES, HEDGES OR EVERGREEN SCREENS THEY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO DRY OUT DURING THIS TIME.
WE RECOMMEND PLANTING AND AFTERCARE BE CARRIED OUT BY EXPERIENCED PROFESSIONALS FOR LARGE TREES AND HEDGES.
