Purple Japanese Maples are noted for their bushy habit and colourful foliage, initially deep purple, turning a fiery red in the autumn, providing a long seasonal interest. Ideal for patios and courtyard or cottage gardens.
Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum', is a small deciduous Japanese Maple grown for its seven-lobed, deep-purple leaves that turn to a fiery red during the autumn months. Brighten a shady corner with this richly colourful ornamental tree and watch with delight as the delicate fronds turn to create a stunning autumnal display. Purple Japanese Maples are small yet bushy in habit and due to their slow growth, can live happily in the same container or spot in the garden for many years to come. They are also ideal for novice gardeners or those with busy lives as Acers are easy to grow and require little maintenance other than watering when needed. Plant in moist, well-drained soil in partial shade with protection from wind and full sun to prevent leaf scorch.Although most Japanese Maples can grow up to 4m in height and spread or more, it will take around 20-50 years to achieve this, therefore they are still widely conisdered an ideal ornamental tree for smaller gardens.
