Acer platanoides 'Crimson King' gets its name from the deep crimson/purple foliage that grows on this robust and vigorous ornamental tree in spring and summer. The autumn leaves are orange and brown making this a spectacular tree year round.

Purple Norway Maple is ideal for planting in larger gardens and can tolerate exposed and coastal positions.

Planting Advice

Our single stem, pot grown Purple Norway Maple trees can be planted all year-round. To aid the trees growth more effectively, sprinkle root grow when planting. Here are some tips for planting your maple tree:

  1. Dig a square hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 2x as wide
  2. Place the roots of the tree into the hole, fill it with your soil mix and firm around gently (avoid banking the collar of the tree)
  3. Use ericaceous compost when possible to encourage vibrant foliage colour

Aftercare Advice

Once planted, it is important to keep the area free of competing weeds for the first couple of growing seasons.

  • If planting in spring or summer, water well for the first few months and increase watering if there are periods of hot or dry weather.
  • If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little.

If your area is prone to rabbits, use a rabbit guard.

Pruning Advice

Purple Norway Maple trees rarely need pruning, the natural shape is usually the most attractive.

  • Only remove, crossing, damaged or diseased branches

Prune in the dormant season (November to March).

Norway Maple trees bleed during other times of the year so pruning then can weaken the tree.
