  • Apple Red Falstaff Tree

    Malus domestica 'Red Falstaff'

    From £54.16

Red Falstaff apple trees are very popular for their fruity and well balanced flavour. The crisp, juicy apples have red flushed skin over greenish-yellow. They are best when eaten fresh straight from the tree and keep very well. These heavy crops of delicious red apples are ready for picking in late season (October). They are best suited to clay, sandy and loam soil types and prefer to be positioned in full sun. Malus domestica 'Red Falstaff' is the latin name for these juicy trees, growing to a height of around 5 metres after 10 years.

Red Falstaff apples have crunchy, creamy coloured flesh under red skin. The flesh has a near perfect balance of sweet on sharp and tastes. These juicy apples are fantastic for home juicing. The apples preserve well and will last throughout the winter. As a self-fertile variety, Red Falstaff apple trees do not require a pollinator.

    Planting Advice

Our pot grown Apple Red Falstaff trees can be planted all year-round. To aid the trees growth more effectively, sprinkle root grow when planting. Here are some tips for planting your apple tree:

    1. Dig a square hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 3x as wide
    2. Mix 50% of the original soil with 50% compost
    3. Place the roots of the tree into the hole, fill it with your soil mix and firm around gently (avoid banking the collar of the tree)

    Aftercare Advice

Keep the area free of competing weeds and grass for the first couple of growing seasons.

    • If planting in spring or summer, water well for the first few months and increase watering if there are periods of hot or dry weather.
    • If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little.

If your area is prone to rabbits, use a rabbit guard.

    Pruning Advice

It is important to prune your apple tree for the first few years to ensure a a healthy, goblet-like shape.

    • Remove the lowest laterals (formative pruning)
    • Prune back other branches to half their length (formative pruning)
    • Remove any shoots growing out of the trunk to maintain a clear stem
    • Rmove crossing, diseased or damaged branches
    • Remove some of the larger branches to open up the canopy

Formative pruning should take place in early spring.

General pruning should take place between November and March.
