• Beech - Green

    Fagus sylvatica

    From £1.60

Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is the classic native hedging plant. It is well know for its superb foliage of delicate fluttery leaves which are initially a gentle soft golden green, then turning bright green and finally coppery meaning your garden will benefit from seasonal colours.

Beech is the ideal hedging plant to provide seasonal colour and year-round interest. Fagus sylvatica is technically a deciduous hedging plant however it tends to keep its leaves throughout the year. The green wavy edged leaves will turn to a crisp coppery effect in the autumn and winter and these tend to stay on until the new growth in spring.

Beech is part of our native hedging range and it is relatively fast growing so it does need pruning in late summer/ early autumn, pruning this time of year also gives your beech hedging the best chance of holding onto its winter leaves.

Beech would form what we call a formal hedge but it can be planted amongst other native hedging plants due to its wonderful wildlife attributes and its winter colouring. For a healthy beech hedge, it is best grown in sun or partial shade and it suits any well drained soil, however, it is not suitable for heavy clay or wet sites. For alternative native hedging plants, please see our range here

Please also see another one of our colourful hedging plants, Purple (Copper) Beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea').

Beech hedging maintenance - Beech hedging is relatively low maintenance and by planning your beech hedging care routine carefully, you will only have to prune once or twice a year. A beech hedge can be tidied up in June, if it’s looking a little messy. We recommend pruning an established beech hedge in late summer, August is the ideal time, as a late summer cutting means that the plants have enough time to regrow and recover before the winter and having a last flush of growth increases the winter coverage that makes beech hedging so popular. Looking after a beech hedge is important, but it is possible to renovate an overgrown beech hedge. This sort of beech hedging maintenance should be carried out in February whilst it’s still dormant. If your overgrown beech hedge requires cutting back by more than half of its size it is best to do this gradually over two growing seasons. Firstly, cut back the top and one side of the hedge, leaving the other side for the following year. Hard pruning is nothing to worry about, the beech hedging growth rate is particularly fast, approximately 30-60cm per year so your hedge will soon recover. With regular beech hedging maintenance, we do recommend using a slow release fertiliser, such as Bonemeal.

    1. Select Root Type

    Bare Root

Bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from November to March (weather dependant). We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the planting season but they can be pre-ordered in summer to guarantee your stock. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options and the cheapest way to plant a hedge.

    Root Ball

Root ball plants are also seasonal stock as they can only be lifted when they are dormant, from November to March (weather dependant). These plants are scooped out of the ground like an ice-cream using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks.  They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly. Root ball hedging plants give an instant effect and are a cheaper alternative to instant trough grown hedging.

    Pot Grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and they are our mose convenient option of hedging plants. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements. From small 2L shrubs to large 15L extra tall hedging, there will be a pot grown plant for any garden type.

    Instant Hedging

Our Instant Hedging is grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season to create a dramatic, instant hedge effect. If you are looking for a quick fix or an instant impact, Instant Trough Grown hedging is the solution for you.
