Planting Advice

Our pot grown Himalayan Birch trees can be planted all year-round. To aid the trees growth more effectively, sprinkle root grow when planting. Here are some tips for planting:

  1. Dig a square hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 2x as wide
  2. Mix 50% of the original soil with 50% compost
  3. Place the roots of the tree into the hole, fill it with your soil mix and firm around gently (avoid banking the collar of the tree.)

Aftercare Advice

Once planted, keep the area free of competing weeds and grass for the first couple of growing seasons.

  • If planting in spring or summer, water well for the first few months and increase watering if there are periods of hot or dry weather.
  • If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little.

Unlike other species, Birch trees would rather be in wet soil than dry. We reccomend using an Irrigation kit to ensure the soil stays wet enough. If your area is prone to rabbits, place a rabbit guard around your birch tree.

You can also gently wash the white bark with water and a sponge to keep it looking sparkling.

Pruning Advice

Betula utilis jacquemontii trees require minimal pruning. Hard pruning will increase light at the base of the tree, which in turn increases soil temperature and decreases moisture levels.

  • Remove lateral shoots to maintain a clear trunk
  • Prune any diseased or damaged branches

Pruning should take place in late summer to mid-winter.
