Buxus sempervirens hedging

From £2.80

Box (Buxus sempervirens) hedging plants are the ideal species for a low growing hedge or perfect for creating formal borders, as well as being a classic topiary plant. With brightly coloured leaves, this evergreen hedging plant is sure to impress whilst looking neat all year round.

Box, which is also known as Boxwood, is an evergreen and native hedging plant that is used in many gardens to create a lovely, neat formal hedging border. Due to its small, bright green leaves, this hedging plant can be trimmed into lovely shapes.

Why not have a go at Topiary? Box is universally used in the art of creating topiary as it can be moulded into many shapes. Box hedging is very slow growing which also makes it very maintainable.

Box Hedging Problems

Although incredibly popular, Box doesn't come without its (un)fair share of problems. We'd encourage you though not to panic; many of these Buxus sempervirens diseases are rarely disastrous. For more information, please speak to one of our experts today.

Should I Be Worried About Box Hedge Blight?

Box blight is a fungal disease suffered by Box. If you've had issues with box blight before then we recommend considering an alternative species, because the disease live on in the soil for up to 6 years. The majority of our customers have successfully planted and maintained their Box hedging without so much as a hint of Box blight, and we're confident that with the right guidance, you can do the same.

Firstly consider non-chemical preventative control. Clip slightly less regularly to prevent your hedge from becoming extremely dense (causing humidity) and always remove any plants immediately that appear to be affected. Water your plants at the roots, rather than from above, to avoid creating a damp environment. If you do find that your Box hedge has become susceptible to blight then a fungicidal spray can be administered to bring it back to good health.

1. Select Root Type

Bare Root

Bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from November to March (weather dependant). We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the planting season but they can be pre-ordered in summer to guarantee your stock. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options and the cheapest way to plant a hedge.

Root Ball

Root ball plants are also seasonal stock as they can only be lifted when they are dormant, from November to March (weather dependant). These plants are scooped out of the ground like an ice-cream using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks.  They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly. Root ball hedging plants give an instant effect and are a cheaper alternative to instant trough grown hedging.

Pot Grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and they are our mose convenient option of hedging plants. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements. From small 2L shrubs to large 15L extra tall hedging, there will be a pot grown plant for any garden type.

Instant Hedging

Our Instant Hedging is grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season to create a dramatic, instant hedge effect. If you are looking for a quick fix or an instant impact, Instant Trough Grown hedging is the solution for you.
