This fast-growing, bushy, deciduous shrub has long lance-like green leaves, paler underneath, is perfect for a sunny bed or border and thrives in most soil types. Growth can be up to 2.5m after 5-10 years. Considered very low maintenance, hardy and easy to grow. Drought resistant.

Buddleia davidii 'Royal Red’ Butterfly Bush is a deciduous, vigorous shrub with large, purple-red, sweetly-scented flower spikes which attract a variety of pollinators, especially butterflies and why it is so named. Favoured by many a gardener, the Buddleia ‘Royal Red’ has long, lance-like green leaves with pale undersides and arching branches. The flowering period is between July and September and even into October sometimes, ideal for pollinators needing food a little later in the summer season and for extending the blooming season in the garden.  In autumn the leaves become a buttery-gold before falling.

Buddleia 'Royal Red' is a bushy shrub with fairly vigorous growth - up to 40cm a year. It can grow to around 8-9ft tall and equally wide so will benefit from a decent amount of space in a sunny bed or border to look stunning. This particular variety also has some of the largest blooms of any Buddleia and in optimal conditions the flower spikes can be up to 50cm long! Deadheading the flowers once spent will encourage more gorgeous blooms and a hard prune around March the following year will ensure good growth and flower production come the summer.

A deserved recipient of the RHS 'Award of Garden Merit', this pretty and sweetly fragrant plant is beautiful when in bloom and thrives in sunnier positions, although it will tolerate partial shade. Grow in fertile soil of any type with average moisture and well drained.

Deadhead spent blooms in summer to encourage further flower production. Hard prune the plant in March back to three or four buds. This will encourage healthy growth and abundant flower production in the summer.
