This award-winning dwarf Pampas Grass variety is incredibly versatile and is an ideal plant to add structure, movement, contrast and texture to any outdoor space. Ideal for small to mid-sized gardens this impressive grass bears large silky, feathery plumes on long stems above narrow arching leaves in the latter half of the year. Fully hardy, this sun-loving grass will also tolerate poor growing conditions and needs little maintenance to thrive.

A recipient of the prestigious RHS ‘Award of Garden Merit’, Cortaderia selloana ‘Pumila’ is a dwarf variety of Pampas Grass that originated in South America. Unlike its larger cousin, this variety is much more compact - although impressive enough to still be a planting scheme centrepiece. ‘Pumila’ is an evergreen perennial grass which forms a dense clump of narrow, arching, dark-green leaves around 50cm long. In late summer the stunning pale, creamy-coloured, feathery plumes are borne on long stems reaching around 1.2m in height.

Cortaderia ‘Pumila’ can offer a versatile planting option either as a specimen plant, planted en masse for swathes of movement and texture, or to add height and structure to a mixed border or a bed. Alternatively, it can be used as a natural privacy screen or to enhance a calming space.

Cortaderia selloana ‘Pumila’ will grow in any soil type and once established it even tolerates drought and salty air, making it ideal for coastal areas and hot summers. It thrives in less moist soil and prefers a sunny location. Its maximum height and spread is 1.5m x 1.2m.

It is important in the first year of growth to protect the crown of young plants with a good layer of dry mulch in winter. Once the plant is more established it will become much hardier.

To tidy the plant up, in early spring, remove the spent flower stems. Ensure that all spent plant debris is removed from the base of the plant so that growth is not restricted or choked.

The leaves are somewhat razor-edged so it is necessary to wear good, thick gardening gloves when undertaking trimming and stem removal.
