Gorgeous pink-purple fluffy flower plumes hovering over deep-purple foliage in late spring gives this large, deciduous shrub its common name of Smoke Bush. The leaves remain purple until autumn when they become a vivid red before falling. An ideal specimen shrub, this will tolerate most free-draining soils and locations but a sunny position is best for good leaf colouration. Can grow to 4 or more metres in height and spread. Drought tolerant when established.

Trim back crossing, diseased or damaged stems in the dormant season in late winter / early spring. Cotinus coggygria ‘Royal Purple’ will also stand a hard prune in order to restore a good shape and revive the plant.
Hard pruning will encourage new shoots and more vibrant leaf colouration, however after a hard cut back, flowers may not be as prolific the following season.
