As the name of Flowering Hawthorn suggests, this tree has sharp thorns on its branches. The vibrant flowers appear in May against the lush, glossy green, deeply lobed foliage. The lightly scented blossom is very popular with bees & butterflies and the red berries are great for attracting birds.

'Crimson Cloud' is a really special small garden tree suited to exposed, coastal, polluted and damp sites.

Planting Advice

Our single stem, pot grown Flowering Hawthorn trees can be planted all year-round. To aid the trees growth more effectively, sprinkle root grow when planting. Here are some tips for planting your Hawthorn tree:

  1. Dig a square hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 2x as wide
  2. Mix 50% of the original soil with 50% compost
  3. Place the roots of the tree into the hole, fill it with your soil mix and firm around gently (avoid banking the collar of the tree)

Aftercare Advice

Once planted, keep the area free of competing weeds and grass for the first couple of growing seasons.

  • If planting in spring or summer, water well for the first few months and increase watering if there are periods of hot or dry weather.
  • If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little.

If your area is prone to rabbits, use a rabbit guard.

Pruning Advice

When pruning Flowering Hawthorn, make sure enough light reaches the inner canopy.

  • Remove lower branches to raise the crown
  • Prune damaged or crossing branches

Prune after flowering if you are looking to re-shape your trees form.

Regular pruning can be done in autumn.
