  • Euonymus 'Alatus'

    Winged Spindle

    From £14.99

More commonly known as Burning Bush, Euonymus ‘Alatus’ is a deciduous shrub with green elliptical foliage and tiny greenish flowers in spring. The flowers are followed later by reddish-purple fruits that split to reveal orange seeds. However, it is in autumn that the shrub simply bursts into colour taking on the intense red and pink colouration which gives it its name. A perfect specimen shrub for superb autumn colour. Height and spread at maturity 2m x 3m.

Euonymus ‘Alatus’ is a bushy deciduous, slow-growing shrub also known as Winged Spindle or more commonly Burning Bush - so named for the intensely vivid crimson and bright-pink tones that the foliage takes on in autumn providing a spectacular display. In spring it develops small, pale-green flowers and in autumn, purple-red fruit capsules develop that eventually split exposing orange seeds, which are enjoyed by birds over the winter months. Corky wings sprouting from the bark are revealed in winter, hence the name ‘Winged Spindle’.

Featuring a broad habit and flatter crown, this colourful shrub, native to Asia, will grow in any moist and well-drained soil. It is unfussy of location and is very hardy in the UK climate. Euonymus ‘Alatus’ grows best in a sunny or partially shaded position but full sun ensures the best colour.

The height and spread at maturity is a modest 2 x 3m and so Euonymus ‘Alatus’ is suited to most gardens. Plant as a specimen shrub to become an eye-catching focal point during autumn or against an evergreen backdrop for contrast.

Please note all parts can cause severe discomfort if eaten including for household pets.
