Golden Bamboo will bring some sunshine to your garden with its sunny, golden yellow stems stand brightly amongst green foliage. Phyllostachys aurea is the perfect hedging alternative for a contemporary style garden.

Bamboo makes the perfect hedging plant alternative, not only is it evergreen and fast growing it is also low maintenance so you can leave it to grow freely and create that contemporary style you are looking for. Golden Bamboo has all the features of green and black bamboo but with the bright golden colouring that will bring some life to your garden. Phyllostachys aurea has brightly coloured yellow stems that stand out amongst the bright green foliage. When first starting out, Golden Bamboo has lemony yellow canes with green stripes and in good sunlight the canes will turn golden yellow.

Golden Bamboo is classed as low maintenance, but it can take a year or two to fully settle and they need to be watered well until they are established. Bamboo can be invasive so if you do not want your bamboo to get too out of control, you can plant bamboo underground in pots (twice their root size) to contain their height and growth spread.

Planting bamboo in a slightly dry soil will also slow down their growth rate, which can reach up to 6m, as this wouldn’t be their first choice in soil choice. To achieve a fully growing bamboo hedge, plant them slightly below ground level. They prefer sun or semi shade and will grow by 60/90cm pa.

As Golden Bamboo is such a fast growing species pruning will need to be done regularly to keep the desired effect. Any unwanted or damaged canes should be cut down to ground level in springtime and any new golden bamboo shoots should also be pruned to the established height of the plants.

General hedge trimming should be done twice a year, once in early June and again in late September. It is important to prune at the right time, so as not to remove healthy growing shoots.

1. Select Root Type

Bare Root

Bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from November to March (weather dependant). We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the planting season but they can be pre-ordered in summer to guarantee your stock. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options and the cheapest way to plant a hedge.

Root Ball

Root ball plants are also seasonal stock as they can only be lifted when they are dormant, from November to March (weather dependant). These plants are scooped out of the ground like an ice-cream using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks.  They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly. Root ball hedging plants give an instant effect and are a cheaper alternative to instant trough grown hedging.

Pot Grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and they are our mose convenient option of hedging plants. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements. From small 2L shrubs to large 15L extra tall hedging, there will be a pot grown plant for any garden type.

Instant Hedging

Our Instant Hedging is grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season to create a dramatic, instant hedge effect. If you are looking for a quick fix or an instant impact, Instant Trough Grown hedging is the solution for you.
