Berberis Thunbergii, also known as Japanese or Compact Barberry, has vivid green foliage that will turn shades of orange and red in the autumn. This is a deciduous variety of Berberis so it will provide seasonal colour to your garden whilst also providing a source of food and shelter for wildlife.
Japanese Barberry, also known as Compact Barberry, is a slow growing variety of the Berberis family. They are ideal for low, formal hedges, similar to how Box hedging is displayed and this variety makes a great alternative to Box (Buxus sempervirens) especially if your garden has suffered from Box Blight. Berberis thunbergii is still as thorny as other varieties but with it's slower growth rate, these thorns benefit wildlife more than being an intruder proof hedge. The red jewel-like berries hang from its branches in the autumn, a real treat for birds. Berberis thunbergiis leaves are green but with being deciduous, these will fall off in the winter but not until they have treated your garden to colours of orange and yellow. They are tough, easy to grow hedging plants which do well in virtually any soil and situation including coastal, though they do like sun or partial shade.
