Griselinia littoralis

New Zealand Privet hedging

From £4.49

Griselinia littoralis (New Zealand Privet) is dense in nature and makes a great hedging plant whilst bringing lots of colour and style to your gardens. The glossy apple green leaves have a rubbery feel to them and shine bright all year round. It is relatively fast growing but does not require a lot of maintenance so it's an ideal hedging plant to be left to grow on its own. Griselinia prefers well-drained soil and is one of the most suitable species for seaside gardens.

Griselinia littoralis is a great low maintenance evergreen hedge plant but differs in pruning times dependent on the age of the hedge.

For newly planted hedges planted in the winter months, some preliminary pruning can take place in spring after planting and then again in spring for the following couple of years. Once more mature, Griselinia hedging can be pruned on an annual maintenance basis in the summer to keep it to the desired shape.

Pruning is relatively easy and mostly consists of removing any dead, damaged or diseased shoots and general trimming to shape. As Griselinia is a less 'formal' hedge, it doesn't require extensive pruning. Garden shears will generally be adequate for the task unless the hedge is of a size that makes trimming by hand impractical, at which point a hedge trimmer would be the sensible option when trimming to shape.

It may also be beneficial to the plant to mulch or feed after pruning. This can help the plant to recover and thrive. A general purpose fertiliser will be adequate.

Don't forget however, that you must check the hedge for any potential nest sites prior to commencing any trimming, especially with electric trimmers.

1. Select Root Type

Bare Root

Bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from November to March (weather dependant). We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the planting season but they can be pre-ordered in summer to guarantee your stock. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options and the cheapest way to plant a hedge.

Root Ball

Root ball plants are also seasonal stock as they can only be lifted when they are dormant, from November to March (weather dependant). These plants are scooped out of the ground like an ice-cream using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks.  They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly. Root ball hedging plants give an instant effect and are a cheaper alternative to instant trough grown hedging.

Pot Grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and they are our mose convenient option of hedging plants. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements. From small 2L shrubs to large 15L extra tall hedging, there will be a pot grown plant for any garden type.

Instant Hedging

Our Instant Hedging is grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season to create a dramatic, instant hedge effect. If you are looking for a quick fix or an instant impact, Instant Trough Grown hedging is the solution for you.
