Hazel (Corylus avellana) is a native deciduous hedging plant that has distinctive pale yellow fluffy catkins. This hedging plant can be planted alone or with other native hedging plants to create a mixed native hedge.
Hazel (Corylus avellana) has rounded and slightly hairy leaves that have a pointed tip. The green leaves turn a lovely shade of yellow and orange in the autumn before falling off when the season changes. Corylus avellana produces edible nuts that are popular with wildlife, particularly squirrels, and has attractive, long, yellow catkins that adorn the branches in early spring. You can plant Hazel alone to create a feature hedge or plant with other native hedging plants to create a mixed native hedge. Please see our native hedging plants range here.
Brutting or breaking sideshoots half way along their length in August followed by shortening the brutted shoots to 3-4 buds when the catkins are shedding pollen in late winter. When necessary remove up to one third of old overcrowded shoots to the main branches.
