On Monday 11th June, Dispatches completed a world-first experiment to reduce hundreds of primary school children’s exposure to toxic air. After visiting one of the most polluted primary schools in the country, Dispatches tested the air and found very alarming pollution levels that were drastically affecting the children’s health. After planting Ivy screens and other hedging plants, these levels had reduced the pollution levels by as much as 53% – a siginificant reduction within a very short timeframe.
Hedera helix Ivy screens (a non-invasive variety) are an innovative screening solution that mean you can enjoy the security of a long lasting fence with the aesthetic and environmental benefits of a hedge.
Our range of Hedera helix screens are grown on galvanised steel frames using 13 plants, each with five shoots, creating full coverage. Ivy Screens are easy to install and make a low maintenance, sustainable living fence.
Different uses for Ivy Screens
Ivy screens are a great alternative to fences and bushy hedges. They are an immediate, cost effective perimeter solution.
Family Gardens: Instant security – wall screens keep children and pets in and intruders out. Instant privacy – create a secluded area within your garden by planting Hedera screens around your seating area.
Space saving – small gardens needn’t be overlooked by neighbours, our Ivy fence panels only reach 20cm in depth so can be planted in even the smallest of gardens and still won’t limit your outdoor space.
Businesses and Public areas: Instant security – with a ten year guarantee on the steel frame, you can secure your perimeter and maintain peace of mind whilst helping to reduce pollution.
Prevent anti-social behaviour – you no longer need to erect an ugly security fence to keep your business protected. Ivy screens can be planted instead of fencing or against walls to prevent graffiti.
Urban gardens – Hedera screens are popularly used in cities to create roof gardens and green areas.
Less hassle – save on the paperwork! Unlike walls, you do not need planning permission to erect Ivy fence panels of up to 2.2m high. Ivy screens can be used for a multitude of purposes, all of which help to reduce pollution and increase wildlife habitats. Hedera screens acts as a wind break, privacy screen, living wall and security perimeter but take up less space than a thick hedge.
Hedera helix ‘Woerner’ is a classic dark green ivy with large shiny leaves and prominent white veins. Especially vigorous and hardy, this variety of Ivy is one of the most frost resistant and thrives in partial or full shade, although it will tolerate full sun also.
Hedera helix ‘White Ripple’ is an attractive ivy with a mid-green leaf featuring a soft white margin. Its elongated frond-like leaf tips give a wispy, softer overall appearance. This fast growing evergreen will grow well in sunny or shaded positions.
Hedera helix ‘Hibernica’, alternatively known as Atlantic or Irish Ivy, has a dark green, glossy leaf with defined lighter veining and a paler underside when mature. However, the new growth and flowering shoots are a paler green and have a more oval rather than defined multi-tipped shape. Salt tolerant, this particular variety is ideal for coastal areas.
Hedera helix ‘Goldchild’ or ‘Gold Harald’ as it sometimes referred to has a lighter green five-pointed leaf with a broad golden yellow margin on the outer edges. As the leaves mature they develop a more green-grey tone and the yellow lightens. This lovely evergreen grows in all light conditions but prefers a sheltered aspect.
Hedera helix ‘Green Ripple’ is similar to ‘White Ripple’ but has a broader mid-green glossy leaf with light green veining and no outer margin. The edges of the lobes have a slightly jagged appearance but its overall aesthetic is softer and more flowing than either Hibernica or Goldchild. This prolific climber will establish quickly forming a dense habit perfect for screening and privacy.
