Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle'

Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle'

From £16.99

From early summer, Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’ is covered in large, spherical, snowy-white heads of flowers that reach up to 30cms across. This particular Hydrangea shrub produces, without fail, a profusion of much larger flowers than other Hydrangea species. These stunning flowers offer year-round interest, starting as vibrant, lime-green buds and developing into creamy-white flowers that gradually fade back to lime green in autumn before becoming dried brown seed heads. The skeletal remains are an attractive feature through the winter months. Alternatively, the large rounded flowerheads of small, four-petalled creamy white flowers can be cut for fresh or dried arrangements.

This glorious, deciduous shrub has bright green leaves resembling a heart shape. Its bushy foliage acts as an excellent backdrop for the striking flowers. Growing to a height and spread of 1.5-2.5 metres, Hydrangea 'Annabelle' is small and bushy but with large summer flowering making it a great choice to plant as part of a flower or shrub border. It is sometimes grown into a hedge due to the fact that it can be cut back in winter so will remain tidy.

Happiest in moist but well-drained, neutral-acidic soil, Hydrangea ‘Annabelle’ prefers a position in full sun or partial shade. This hardy shrub can be grown in all UK weather climates however it is advised that you grow your shrub against a wall or in a sheltered corner to protect the buds from late frosts.

Hydrangea ‘Annabelle’ is a vigorous bloomer and flowers on new wood. Hard pruning your shrub to the ground, will encourage new shoots to emerge and produce beautiful flowers in summer. A benefit to hard pruning is to keep your shrub denser and more compact. We recommend pruning in late winter or early spring to allow time for the new growth to develop before the flowering season.

It is also not essential to hard prune your Hydrangea ‘Annabelle’. Only lightly pruning the branches will result in thicker and stronger stems. The blooms on Hydrangea ‘Annabelle’ are so large that the shrub can bend or droop in harsher weather conditions. Developing stronger stems on your Hydrangea ‘Annabelle’ can be beneficial for supporting the flowers in summer, especially when considering our unpredictable UK weather.

If you are looking to plant several Hydrangea ‘Annabelle’ shrubs to create a hedge, we recommend planting these approximately a metre apart.

We advise that you keep cats and dogs away from Hydrangea ‘Annabelle’ as it is toxic when ingested. Aphids and capsud bugs may appear on your Hydrangea creating a distorted appearance. Also keep an eye out for leaf spot.
