Hydrangea macrophylla 'White Wave'

Hydrangea macrophylla 'White Wave'

Hydrangea ‘White Wave’ also known as Hydrangea ‘Mariesii Grandiflora’ is a lacecap variety of hydrangea producing clusters of small, pale-pink fertile flowers that develop from lime green buds, surrounded by larger, flattened creamy-white flowers, initially light green. The striking flowers contrast well with the glossy-green oval foliage, growing in ‘waves’ around the florets. Hydrangea ‘White Wave’ is a small to mid-sized, deciduous shrub with excellent wildlife value, attracting bees and butterflies to its fertile clusters of florets with its more showy, larger petaled flowers. The flower heads also make an excellent cut flower to enjoy.

Growing to a height and spread of around 1.5 metres, Hydrangea ‘White Wave’ has a bushy tendency and is commonly grown within a herbaceous border, but can equally be used as an accent or specimen plant with its free-flowering form. It is perfect for small to mid-sized gardens and being salt tolerant is also good for coastal positions but requires shelter from strong winds. Hydrangea ‘White Wave’ should be planted in a non-alkaline soil, preferable clay, sand or loam. For the best flowering in summer, position in full sun or partial shade.

Hydrangea ‘White Wave’ blooms from mid to late summer. It will flower well with very little attention. Hard pruning is not needed, however when pruned right back in early spring, the flowers of your Hydrangea ‘White Wave’ will be larger and more plentiful. If you require a stronger base to your shrub, we recommend only light pruning as this will strengthen the stems.

Hydrangea 'White Wave' can be prone to diseases such as leaf spot or powdery mildew. A sign of this infection is a distorted shape to your shrub’s leaves. These diseases can be treated easily, and we advise removing any infected leaves from around the plant once they fall in autumn.
