Mophead hydrangeas are the most popularly grown hydrangea sub-species in the UK due to their gorgeous blooms. Hydrangea ‘Mophead Blue’ grow dome shaped clusters of bright and punchy, electric-blue flowers. It is a next generation hydrangea shrub with improved flower colour and attractive large, veined leaves with serrated edges. These leaves turn magnificent colours of red and orange in autumn offering   seasonal interest to your garden after the striking flowering season.

Hydrangea ‘Mophead Blue’ is a deciduous shrub that creates a phenomenal focal point in your outside space. It is extremely compact growing to just 1 metre in height and spread so is perfect for smaller spaces such as patios. This shrub is great for landscape borders or grown in a container as a statement plant. Hydrangea ‘Mophead Blue’ prefers a sunny or semi shaded position and should be sheltered from cold winds. The buds of Hydrangea ‘Mophead Blue’ are sensitive to the cold so may be damaged through winter if they are not sheltered.

In order to keep your Hydrangea ‘Mophead Blue’ flowering bright blue blooms, you need to make sure your soil is acidic, otherwise the flowers can bloom pink. To increase the acidity of your soil, add aluminium salts to the soil in late winter or early spring before the new growth starts if needed. Grow your Hydrangea ‘Mophead Blue’ shrub in moist but well-drained soil. For especially good flowering, add compost to your soil.

Mophead hydrangeas bloom well regardless of whether you choose to hard prune your shrub or not. Regular pruning in spring however will encourage new and vigorous growth that in turn will produce a better display. If you are hoping to strengthen your shrub, it is advised not to hard prune your shrub, just do a quick trim, to enable the stem system to strengthen. After pruning your Hydrangea ‘Mophead Blue’, apply compost around the base of the plant.

Hydrangea ‘Mophead Blue’ needs lots of water so the soil should be kept adequately watered particularly if planted in a container which can dry out much quicker. A good sign that your shrub needs more water is if the leaves start to wilt.
