Hydrangea 'Mophead Red'

Hydrangea 'Mophead Red'

From £19.99

In the summer months, Hydrangea ‘Mophead Red’ is bursting with bright pink and red fluffy clusters of flowers. Its flowers grow proudly above large, mid-green foliage. As autumn approaches, the foliage starts to develop into bronzed red tones adding even more beauty to your garden.

Hydrangea ‘Mophead Red’ is a small, deciduous shrub that grows compact and bushy.Whilst only growing to a height and spread of 1 metre, its flowers are incredibly striking and eye-catching whether planted in a flower bed or left to grow in a container as a feature piece. Mophead Hydrangeas are the most popular of the Hydrangeas grown in gardens all over the UK due to their gorgeous and very impressive blossom.

To ensure your Hydrangea ‘Mophead Red’ keeps its wonderful red and pink petals, you will need to plant in alkaline soil. If your soil is too acidic, the flowers will begin to grow shades of blue. The soil will also need to be moist and well-drained and we advise adding compost as a nutrient aid. Whilst Hydrangea ‘Mophead Red’ is a hardy shrub, it is best positioned in sun or only partly shaded and should be sheltered from cold winds as the new buds are sensitive to the cold in winter months.

Your Hydrangea ‘Mophead Red’ will blossom on fresh wood and reliably regardless of your pruning regime. For a stronger stem system, simply trim the ends slightly. If you are hoping for a larger bloom, pruning your shrub right back will encourage vigorous new growth and an impressive display of vibrant flowers.

Water your hydrangea well as it is developing and make sure your soil is kept moist. If you are growing your Hydrangea ‘Mophead Red’ in a container, be mindful that the soil will dry out faster so should be topped up more frequently. A good way to tell whether your shrub needs more water is if the foliage starts to wilt.

Flowers fading from pink and becoming blue tinged blue means the soil is becoming too acidic. Treat accordingly with lime to increase alkalinity.
