Hydrangea serrata 'Bluebird'

Hydrangea serrata 'Bluebird'

From £8.99

Hydrangea serrata 'Bluebird' is a small, deciduous lace-cap variety of hydrangea with stunning dual flowers. At the centre of each dense cluster are small fertile indigo florets that contrast beautifully with the large-petalled, silvery-blue flowers that bloom on the outer edge. These delicate, flattened flowers around the fertile centre attract pollinators such as bees. A recipient of the RHS ‘Award of Garden Merit’ this beautiful shrub is a show-stopper and offers spectacular seasonal interest. The lightly scented flowers develop in summer and stay through autumn and the slender, mid-green leaves present in spring and summer, take on dusky red shades in autumn.

Hydrangea ‘Bluebird’ is very compact, growing to a height and spread of 0.5-1 metre. It is therefore perfect for smaller spaces, whether this be in a garden flower bed or perhaps container grown on a patio or balcony. Hydrangea ‘Bluebird’ is an incredibly hardy shrub making it a great choice for areas with late winter frost.

Serrata hydrangeas can grow in full sun but are happier in a semi-shaded position. Too much shade however will reduce their flowering. If grown in full sun, ensure that the soil does not dry out as Hydrangea ‘Bluebirds’ like moist, well-drained soil. To guarantee the soothing bluey tones of your Hydrangea ‘Bluebird’, make sure your shrub is planted in acidic soil. If planted in neutral or alkaline soils the flowers will grow pink.

You should remove faded, old flowerheads in spring after the danger of frost damage has subsided. Cut back the flowered stems to a strong pair of buds. Also remove diseased or misplaced shoots.

It is important to keep your Hydrangea ‘Bluebird’ watered on a consistent basis as they are sensitive to drought. If the soil that your Hydrangea ‘Bluebird’ is growing in has lost its acidity - and the flowers are losing their blue tones - you can treat the soil with aluminium salts.

Look out for pests such as aphids, capsid bug and glasshouse red spider mite if distortions occur.
