From £16.99

Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum Jasminoides) also known as Chinese Ivy, is a stunning shrub that makes a great additon to any garden. Its striking foliage of glossy, green leaves and small, white, pinwheel-like flowers that are highly fragrant appear throughout summer and they help make it a very attractive shrub and hedging plant.

This pretty, evergreen shrub has a similar manner to Irish Ivy as it is particularly effective at providing screening for walls or fences and ideal for framing over trellises, arbors and pergolas. Providing year round interest, this hardy shrub is ideal used as both a climbing or ground covering plant.

Jasmine Star (Trachelospermum Jasminoides) equires only minimal initial training as a climber, after which it grows happily over framework without much intervention; lateral growth can be encouraged by pinching out the tips of the plant.

Pruning for a climbing plant, if necessary, should be carried out after flowering to keep growth contained to the required height and shape. Renovation of old or overgrown plants however, is best done in early spring before growing commences. Planting density/distance is as shown but you can vary this depending on your budget and level of patience.

To grow Star Jasmine as a hedge rather than as a climber, it is important to regularly pinch out tips on the new upward growth from the time of planting so that it doesn't grow into the usual climbing vine. By continuing to pinch out any new upward growing tips, it encourages lateral stems and growth to develop, so encouraging the plant to spread rather than climb.

Regularly pruning in this way will eventually produce a free-standing hedge around 2 ft in height. A taller hedge can be developed by growing onto a trellis.

Once grown to the desired height and shape, maintenance trimming is best left until flowering has finished in summmer after which a light trim to tidy can be carried out.

For more extensive trimming however, for overgrown or congested plants, this should be done in late winter or early spring before growth begins again for the season.

After any pruning, we recommend mulching and feeding to ensure the plant recovers well. Feed Star Jasmine weekly in its growing and flowering phase to encourage good foliage and flower production. A feed for flowering and fruiting crops is beneficial.
