  • Laburnum anagyroides 'Yellow Rocket'

    Laburnum anagyroides

Laburnum x anagyroides 'Yellow Rocket' is referred to as a Golden Chain tree for this stunning display of vibrant yellow, scented flowers that hang in pendulous racemes in Spring. The bold green foliage creates the perfect backdrop for these striking flowers. This Golden Chain tree has a height and spread of 4 x 3 metres in 10 years. It is suited to all soil types and best positioned in full sun.

This popular spring flowering Laburnum is a wildlife magnet! The bright sunny yellow pendant flowers create a beautiful sunshine effect and are perfect for attracting bees and butterflies to the garden.

The Golden Chain tree has a very narrow upright growth habit so it is perfect for any size garden. You can use this Laburnum to add vertical interest to the garden that will contrast nicely with lower growing shrubs like ornamental grasses. It can also be trained onto a pergola or archway to create an eye-catching covered walkway.

This tree is toxic to humans and animals when ingested, especially the seed pods.

    Planting Advice

Our single stem, pot grown Laburnum 'Yellow Rocket' trees can be planted all year-round. Due to the toxicity of Laburnum, we recommend avoiding planting it where the pods could fall into a pond and potentially affect wildlife in the water. To aid the trees growth more effectively, sprinkle root grow when planting. Here are some tips for planting your Laburnum tree:

    1. Dig a square hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 2x as wide
    2. Mix 50% of the original soil with 50% compost
    3. Place the roots of the tree into the hole, fill it with your soil mix and firm around gently (avoid banking the collar of the tree)

    Aftercare Advice

Keep the area free of competing weeds and grass for the first couple of growing seasons.

    • If planting in spring or summer, water well for the first few months and increase watering if there are periods of hot or dry weather.
    • If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little.

If your area is prone to rabbits, use a rabbit guard.

It is quite common for Laburnum trees to flower well one year and then not so well the next, and then back to a good year again.

    Pruning Advice

Laburnum do not require regular pruning, but take well to pruning if desired.

    • Tidy up during dormant season (not essential)
    • Remove damaged, diseased or overcrowded brances
    • Remove any side shoots to help raise the crown (if you want a clear trunk)
    • Can be pruned into an arch shape (if desired)

    Prune during dormant season.
