Mahonia ‘Winter Sun’ is so named for the beautiful yellow flower spikes that rise above the long arching stems with their glossy-green, holly-like leaves through the cold winter months, bringing a ray of sunshine into the winter garden. Not only are the flowers bright and sunny, they are highly fragrant and similar in scent to Lily-of-the-Valley. This mid-sized, hardy evergreen shrub will grow to 4m x 2.5m height and spread and will bring a shady corner of the garden to life all year round.

Mahonia x media ‘Winter Sun’ is a distinctive evergreen shrub which unusually, flowers in winter. Between November and March, it produces long, arching, tapered flower clusters which are bright yellow and highly fragrant – fantastic for enlivening and bringing stunning colour to the bleak winter garden. The sunny flowers are followed on in spring by ornamental blue-black berries for additional seasonal interest.

This mid-sized, bushy shrub is a prickly character, featuring spiny-toothed deep-green glossy leaves similar in shape to Holly leaves, growing in pairs on upright stems from a central rosette. Because of its striking architectural form, superb winter colour and stunning fragrance, Mahonia ‘Winter Sun’ has been awarded the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit.

A shade-loving plant, Mahonia ‘Winter Sun’ will grow in all moist soil types and locations and has a height and spread of up to 4m x 2.5m. Allow it a decent amount of room to grow in a shady spot and you’ll be rewarded with a sunny view in the winter months, regardless of the weather.

Mahonia plants will quite happily look after themselves. If a tidy-up is needed to remove any damaged or diseased stems, this is best done in spring once the flowers are spent. If the plant is becoming too leggy, cut back by around a third to encourage new growth from the bottom. The plant will also benefit from a generous helping of mulch, either well-rotted compost or manure, around the base in spring.

Be aware: the leaves of Mahonia are spiny and fairly rigid not unlike Holly. We recommend using thick gloves and wearing long sleeves when pruning or mulching as the stems can be long and the sharp spines plentiful!
