    Planting Advice

Our pot grown Plum Opal trees can be planted all year-round. To aid the trees growth more effectively, sprinkle root grow when planting. Here are some tips for planting your plum tree:

    1. Dig a square hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 3x as wide
    2. Mix 50% of the original soil with 50% compost
    3. Place the roots of the tree into the hole, fill it with your soil mix and firm around gently (avoid banking the collar of the tree)

Plum trees will not grow happily in a pot long term, they need to be planted in the ground.

    Aftercare Advice

Keep the area free of competing weeds and grass for the first couple of growing seasons.

    • If planting in spring or summer, water well for the first few months and increase watering if there are periods of hot or dry weather
    • If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little
    • Once the fruit begins to swell, water again

If your area is prone to rabbits, use a rabbit guard.

    Pruning Advice

It is important to prune your plum tree for the first few years to ensure a balanced shape and healthier tree.

    • Remove the lowest laterals and prune the rest back to about 10-15cm in length (formative pruning)
    • Remove any shoots growing out of the trunk to maintain a clear stem
    • Rmove crossing, diseased or damaged branches
    • Remove some of the larger branches to open up the canopy.

Formative pruning should take place in early spring.

General pruning should take place in spring or mid-summer
