Bare root Box hedging plants are a great way to achieve a dense hedge at a low price. Although bare roots take slightly longer to develop into a thick hedge, the success rate of this root type is very high and the range of sizes available means there is Buxus sempervirens to suit every planting scheme.
Planting Density
Small Height plants
20/30cm, 30/40cm, 40/60cm, 60/90cm, 80/100cm, 90/120cm – we recommend 5 to 7 plants per metre.
Medium Height Plants
120/150cm – we recommend 3 to 5 plants per metre.
Tall Plants
150cm and above – we recommend 3 plants per metre.
Many of the bare root plants are deciduous and to give a good hedge, these are generally planted in a double staggered row. The evergreen versions of bare root (Yew, Laurel, Box and Privet) are generally planted a little less densely than the deciduous version – but a lot depends on the height the hedge is to be eventually – the taller the hedge, the less densely you should plant.

If you receive bare root plants but are unable to plant them immediately, for instance if it is not convenient or the ground is frozen, they can be stored in one of the following ways:
1. If the ground is not frozen dig a narrow trench and heel them in making sure the roots are covered with damp soil.
2. If the ground is frozen undo the package, check that the roots have not dried out (if they are dry stand them in water for up to an hour and then drain them), re-pack the root system only and keep in a cool shed or garage until the planting conditions improve.
