Prunus Kanzan

Planting Advice

Our single stem, pot grown Prunus Kanzan trees can be planted all year-round. To aid the trees growth more effectively, sprinkle root grow when planting. Here are some tips for planting your cherry tree:

  1. Dig a square hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 2x as wide
  2. Mix 50% of the original soil with 50% compost
  3. Place the roots of the tree into the hole, fill it with your soil mix and firm around gently (avoid banking the collar of the tree)

Aftercare Advice

Once planted, keep the area free of competing weeds and grass for the first couple of growing seasons.

  • If planting in spring or summer, water well for the first few months and increase watering if there are periods of hot or dry weather.
  • If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little.

If your area is prone to rabbits, use a rabbit guard.

Pruning Advice

Prune Prunus Kanzan for the first few years to create a healthier and more balanced branch framework.

  • Prune branches to desired shape (in first few years)
  • Remove any damaged or unwanted branches (later years)

Prune after the flowering season.

One of the most popular Japanese flowering cherry trees, Prunus 'Kanzan' is bursting with blousy, pinkish/purple flowers with a frilly edge in spring until its bronze foliage begins to grow. The bronze coloured, new leaves turn mid-green before adopting burnt orange colours in autumn. In 10 years of growth, this cherry tree has a height and spread of 5 x 4 metres. Suited to all soil types, Prunus Kanzan is best positioned in full or partial sun.
