Prunus 'Kojo-No-Mai'

Cherry 'Kojo-No-Mai'

From £14.99

Prunus incisa ‘Kojo-no-mai’ also called Fuji Cherry or just Cherry ‘Kojo-no-mai’, is a deciduous tree-like shrub with a compact, rounded shape and unusual zig-zagging branches, eventually reaching around 2m height and spread. As with other flowering cherry varieties, Prunus ‘Kojo-no-mai’ bursts into bloom in early spring with clusters of small, delicate white flowers on slim stems which develop pretty rose-bud pink centres as they mature. The lance-shaped leaves emerge just after the flowers as bronze-green with serrated edges, becoming pale green in summer, then taking on rich tones of orange and red in autumn before falling.

Prunus ‘Kojo-no-mai’ has been awarded both the RHS Award of Garden Merit and RHS Plants for Pollinators for its unique and attractive appearance throughout the seasons, benefiting both people and pollinators. This lovely shrub makes an eye-catching focal point for either the garden or the patio, taking well to container growing or to planting in. Due to its small stature and slow growth, it is a perfect addition for a smaller garden, yet big on style.

Prunus ‘Kojo-no-mai’ is best positioned in full sun. Despite its delicate looks however, it is fully hardy and adapted to the UK climate, even extremely cold weather. Plant in moist, well-drained soil and prune lightly annually after flowering to maintain its shape and health. Ensure you water well for several months after planting.

Prunus ‘Kojo-no-mai’ is slow growing so only needs a small amount of maintenance. Trim to shape after flowering in late spring if needed and remove any diseased, crossing or damaged branches. A regular light prune each year will also help to create a balanced branch framework and a healthy plant.

If you wish to keep it to a smaller more compact shape, Prunus ‘Kojo-no-mai’ will respond well to a hard pruning, but this should only be necessary after several years’ growth.
