Berberis thunbergii atropurpurea

Purple Berberis hedging

From £5.99

This purple variety of Berberis, known as Berberis thunbergii (atropurpurea) or Purple Berberis, is a fantastic hedging choice due to its vivid colours, thorny branches and produce of flowers and berries. This hedging plant and shrub will add colour and texture to your garden and can be planted alone as a stand out feature or amongst other Berberis hedging plants to create a real mixture of colours and textures.

The leaves on Purple Berberis are a rich, dark purple and in the sunlight they can glisten a lovely red shade that is really eye catching. Yellow flowers appear in the spring which stand out against the dark foliage. After flowering you, and the birds, are treated to glossy orange berries that hang from the arching branches, these berries will then turn red in the autumn. This variety of Berberis is deciduous meaning the leaves will fall off in the winter but not until they have turned a fiery display or orange and red.

Berberis thunbergii (atropurpurea) is slow growing so it is easily maintainable and they are ideal for a low hedging style.
