Rowan or Mountain Ash

Rowan plant

Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) is a great native hedging plant, that is tolerant of the unpredictable UK weather and great for providing seasonal interest. It has creamy white clusters of flowers that will bloom in May and June and you will also be treated to a strong, sweet scent. These flowers then become orangea and red berries that are a hit with the birds. Rown, or Mountain Ash, is a popular choice in mixed hedging or can be left to grow as a hedgerow tree.

Rowan is a species that needs to be trimmed when the plant enters dormancy in late autumn or early winter. If trimmed during its growing period, Rowan can bleed a white sap and it can become susceptible to disease as a result. However, if there is dead wood, it can be trimmed back to the live growth at any time.

We'd definitely recommend trimming a Rowan hedge back each year rather than leaving it to completely informal growth, in order to keep a strong and established framework, as the abundant berry clusters it produces in late summer can lie heavy on the branches, causing longer branches to droop.

By trmming back the dead wood and tidying up the hedge in the late autumn or early winter, it readies the plant for the spring encouraging healthy and strong new growth and leading to better blossom and berry production in the year ahead.
