Sambucus 'Black Lace'

Elder 'Black Lace'

From £7.49

Unlike common Elder, which has white flowers, black berries and green foliage, Sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’ also called Black Elder or Elder ‘Eva’ is strikingly different. Bearing flat clusters of tiny pink flowers up to 15cm diameter on long black stems, and contrasting deep purple-black, slender dissected leaves reminiscent of Acers, Sambucus ‘Black Lace’ is an incredibly eye-catching and unusual shrub. The dramatic dark foliage and tiny pink-flushed fragrant flowers which bloom through early summer give way to brighter red leaves and small reddish-black edible elderberries – a favourite with birds – in autumn.

Although Sambucus ‘Black Lace’ looks delicate, it is fully hardy in the UK climate. It enjoys a sunny or partially shaded spot (foliage colour is more intense in sun) and will grow in most well-drained moist soil types and locations making it a versatile deciduous shrub option. It is a large shrub when fully grown and can reach up to 4m x 4m height and spread, so will suit a mid-large sized garden where it will have adequate room to grow, becoming an impressive focal point. However, Sambucus ‘Black Lace’ will tolerate a hard pruning making it easy to maintain as a smaller shrub if you wish.

Sambucus ‘Black Lace’ is highly regarded for its visual appeal and a favourite with garden designers; it is wholly deserving of its RHS ‘Award of Garden Merit’. This unique and stylish addition to the garden is perfect for shrub borders, beds or as a stand-alone specimen plan. Dramatic and eye-catching, it offers wonderful texture, colour, fragrance and fruits and is a wildlife magnet for birds, bees and other pollinators. The flowers can also be used to make a pink cordial or even Elderflower wine. Plant in pride of place and enjoy!

Sambucus ‘Black Lace’ needs little regular pruning, however if you wish to keep a smaller plant, prune to shape annually in late winter or early spring, also ensuring you remove any diseased or damaged shoots.  If overgrown or straggly this shrub will tolerate a hard prune and can be cut back almost to ground level to renew afresh each spring.  Apply a mulch or manure to a couple of inches around the plant after pruning.

1. Select Root Type

Bare Root

Bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from November to March (weather dependant). We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the planting season but they can be pre-ordered in summer to guarantee your stock. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options and the cheapest way to plant a hedge.

Root Ball

Root ball plants are also seasonal stock as they can only be lifted when they are dormant, from November to March (weather dependant). These plants are scooped out of the ground like an ice-cream using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks.  They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly. Root ball hedging plants give an instant effect and are a cheaper alternative to instant trough grown hedging.

Pot Grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and they are our mose convenient option of hedging plants. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements. From small 2L shrubs to large 15L extra tall hedging, there will be a pot grown plant for any garden type.

Instant Hedging

Our Instant Hedging is grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season to create a dramatic, instant hedge effect. If you are looking for a quick fix or an instant impact, Instant Trough Grown hedging is the solution for you.
