Weigela florida ‘Minor Black’ is a neat and compact deciduous flowering shrub with a plethora of pink funnel-shaped flowers blanketing the plant in late spring and early summer. Featuring an attractive rounded habit and deep bronze/purple leaves, it makes a striking addition to beds, borders or pots and is suitable for small to mid-sized gardens. Weigela ‘Minor Black’ is a delightful and eye-catching shrub, loved by bees and other insects and is very easy to grow and maintain. Maximum height and spread of 75cm.

Weigela florida ‘Minor Black’ is a much more compact variety of Weigela featuring stunning deep purple-green foliage which acts as the perfect foil to the vibrant pink funnel-shaped flowers. The flowers cover the plant in swathes in late spring and early summer offering a rich source of nectar to bees and butterflies.

Only fully growing to around 75cm height and spread, Weigela florida ‘Minor Black’ is a small shrub with a big personality and is incredibly versatile. Its rounded compact form but bold colours make a lovely border plant, it’s also well-suited to low or raised beds and takes equally well to being grown in a container to brighten a patio or general outside space.

Weigela florida ‘Minor Black’ is incredibly easy to grow and will grow in most positions and locations including shade. However, it prefers sun or dappled shade for the best colour, and a well-drained soil on the acidic side if possible. Trimming is best carried out after flowering at which point it can be cut back in to encourage fresh new shoots and branches to grow, in order to keep a bushy, healthy and productive plant. Mulch annually with rotted manure or compost in spring.

The best time to trim Weigela florida ‘Minor Black’ is after flowering.  Simply cut back the stems to where there is a healthy bud. You can cut the stems back to around a third of their growth if required. Additionally, each year, you should also completely cut back around a fifth of older stems down to ground level. By doing this you are undertaking an ongoing rejuvenation of the plant which will ensure that you have new, productive and healthy growth each season as Weigela looks its best on younger stems.

Keep an eye out for and cut away any weak offshoots that look as though they are not likely to bud, to concentrate the growth into stronger stems. Also, remove any dead, diseased or crossing branches that may inhibit growth or cause damage to the main stem.
