Weigela ‘Kosteriana Variegata’ is a pretty, variegated Weigela with mid-green ovate leaves featuring a creamy-yellow margin. In late spring and early summer, the plant becomes festooned with attractive trumpet-shaped pink flowers all along its stems, so much so that the foliage is barely visible. The delightful display lasts for a couple of months before the flowers fade, leaving the ornamental variegated foliage to enjoy. The leaves then turn a buttery-gold in autumn before falling.

Weigela ‘Kosteriana Variegata’ is an excellent choice for informal planting at the back of a border, to add colour and to contrast with other foliage shrubs. Its informal style also lends itself well to a woodland or cottage garden. The prolific blooms attract bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects to the garden and will add a burst of colour in the early summer months to brighten even the dullest of spaces and the pretty variegated foliage remains eye-catching when not in flower.

This compact, rounded, easy-to-grow deciduous shrub is highly adaptable, growing in most locations and soils, as long as moist and well-drained. Weigela ‘Kosteriana Variegata’ enjoys a sunny or partially shaded positions and is considered very low maintenance so perfect for the less experienced gardener. It reaches a maximum height and spread of 2m so is suitable for a wide range of gardens.

Weigela ‘Kosteriana Variegata’ will need little maintenance other than regular watering until established. After a few seasons, it is worth doing a hard prune of the old wood to encourage fresh new shoots to grow. This should be done immediately after flowering.

A good layer of mulch around the base of the plant will help to protect the roots from very hot or very cold conditions.
